Winter in Yellowstone

Moab Master, Salvatore Vasapolli, just announced his February 2013 workshop to Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone is the world's most famous park and winter is one of its most special times. The crowds are now gone, the wildlife subdued and the geysers are in their most splendid display.

The gift that keeps on giving

As we round the corner into holiday chaos we thought we'd make one decision easier for you during this festive season: There's a Moab Paper for every type of photographer (and image).  We'd like to think Moab is on your year-round list of photo gear, but we found a few independent voices to present their faves.

Slickrock Metallic Pearl is one of our most popular papers that makes all types of prints shine, but it seems that B&W photographers have a special place in their hearts for Slickrock. PDN published this article last month.

Lasal Dual Semigloss is the newest paper in the Moab family, and Rangefinder Magazine included it on its annual Buyer's Guide. The article also features a 'Specialty Paper' section, which includes Moenkopi Washi and Entrada Rag.

Photo Techniques magazine also did a double-take (sorry, couldn't resist) and included Lasal Dual Semigloss in the December Gear App article.

Digital Photo Pro lists five Moab papers in their 2013 Pro Buyer's Guide, including the Lasal Exhibition Luster, which is an ideal paper for gallery and exhibition prints.

The hit at PhotoPlus Expo

Another year, another (exceptional) PhotoPlus. Fresh off the heels of the Lasal Dual Semigloss 330 launch at Photokina in Germany, we presented the new paper to the US market.  And the response was phenomenal.

We depleted our pile of sample packs in the first day, so if you didn't receive one email us (with your address) so we can send a kit to you.

Moab Masters Barbara Bordnick, Jim Graham, Jody Dole and Christian LaLonde loaned us images they printed on the Lasal Dual Semigloss, making the paper shine.

Michael Zide printed around 50 of his B&W images in a custom13x19 portfolio on the paper. The paper is truly fingerprint resistant: The book still looked beautiful after three days with hundreds of people flipping through the pages.

Lasal Dual Semigloss 330 is now available in the US.

Kirkland's Monroe Exhibition on Entrada

WESTWOOD GALLERY NYC presents an exhibition of iconic photographs of Marilyn Monroe by legendary photographer Douglas Kirkland, October 26 - December 15, 2012.

The exhibition will showcase stunning photographs of Monroe as she posed for Kirkland lying on a bed enveloped only in white silk sheets. Photographed by Kirkland on November 17, 1961, she died a few months later in 1962; 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of Monroe's death.

On view are images of Monroe never before shown to the public, as well as a series of aesthetically superior quality carbon prints, made exclusively for this exhibition. The exhibition also includes behind the scenes black and white photographs of Kirkland, taken during his photo shoot with Monroe in a California studio. One photograph shows Kirkland as he leans dramatically over an interior balcony to capture ethereal images of Monroe in the bed positioned below.

All the prints in the exhibition were produced on Entrada Rag Natural 290.

Try My Photo with Moab extended

If you haven't had a chance to see what your image looks like on Moab's Slickrock Metallic Pearl or Entrada Rag Bright on Canon's new PIXMA PRO-1 printer, you still have a chance.

It's fun, pretty cool and FREE.

Introducing Lasal Dual Semigloss 330

Today at Photokina we announced the newest paper to the Moab family: Lasal Dual Semigloss 330 - a heavyweight, double-sided fine art paper utilizing state-of-the-art coating technology.

The first heavyweight 330gsm dual-sided inkjet paper in its class, Lasal Dual Semigloss 330 features the latest in coating technology to produce ultra-consistent image reproduction with instant dry-time.  The new coating allows prints to be handled immediately without fingerprints or scuffing making the paper ideal for portfolios and limited edition books where the prints encounter frequent handling.

The new Lasal Dual Semigloss 330 continues to expand Moab's wide range of double-sided fine art media and was developed for those seeking extremely wide color gamut on a two-sided sheet.  Given that the paper will be utilized in albums and portfolios, the paper will be offered in the 11x14 format to better accommodate the print standard established by the photography and presentation industry.

Lasal Dual Semigloss 330 is available in 8.5x11, 11x14, 13x19 and A4 sheets packaged in quantities of 25.

Always something to learn

We love seeing the latest work from our Moab Masters because we are always blown away.

A recent example is Jim Graham.  Every time we open an email from Jim we know that our eyes will feast on images that are truly beautiful.

This photo was taken in New Mexico at the Santa Fe Photo Workshops. But what's interesting is that Jim was not teaching. Rather, he signed up as a student.  Yes, a student!

"I've been asked so many times, 'Why are you taking a class when you could be teaching it?'  Well it's simple, I still believe that I can always learn. And you'll never know what you might take away from a class, even if it's something you needed to be reminded that you knew but had let slip away in the craziness of life."

Thanks, Jim.  And continue dazzling us.

Our new Moab Master from Germany: Peter Frank

Peter Frank is our first German Moab Master.  Based in Dusseldorf, Frank studied the art of painting at FH Cologne. He discovered his talent for pictures and composition and nurtured it by studying photography at the University of Bielefeld. After finishing his studies, he started working as a professional freelance photographer for international advertising agencies – never losing touch with the artistic roots of his career.

When visiting Johannesburg and Cape Town in 1999 during a photo shoot, Peter Franks enthusiasm for South Africa emerged in a flash. Frank, by the time known as a successful commercial photographer in Europe, continued visiting the previously unknown country – and kept doing so for the past twelve years.

Check out Peter Frank's Moab Master Gallery here.

Our new Moab Master: Jim LaSala

We're excited to announce the addition of Jim LaSala to the Moab Master program.

Jim LaSala was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Lived in Staten Island for several years and currently resides in Flemington, New Jersey.  He opened "Strike A Pose Photography Studio” in 1990 specializing in Fine Art Photography, Portraiture and Electronic Imaging.

From (2010-present) Jim has been traveling to Haiti to help document their plight and raise donations for that country with his artwork. Jim is presently managing partner for "ArtisticEfex" in Hillsborough New Jersey.

The French Alps

A final post from France by Joshua Holko:

"One of the real highlights of my trip through France was the opportunity to visit the alpine town of Chamonix. Widely regarded as the mountaineering Mecca of France, Chamonix is a magnet and playground for mountaineers and alpinists from around the world. With its high altitude mountains, precipitous and jagged peaks, and high quality granite spires it is easy to see why.

The town itself is filled with all manner of outdoor clothing, mountaineering and adventure shops. The only other place I can recall seeing such a collection of stores and brands in such a small a geographical area was in Ushuaia at the bottom of South America from where the majority of Antarctica expeditions depart. In short, if you can’t find it in Chamonix you probably don’t need it (although the prices might leave you reeling).

With a day free in Chamonix before heading for Venice, I jumped at the opportunity to take the two cable cars up to the Aiguille Du Midi at just over 12,600 feet for some mountaineering photography.

With no real mountains to speak of in Australia, I am not used to high altitude climbing and suffered from constant lack of breath, light-headedness and a severe headache after twelve hours at nearly 4000 metres. Whilst my Austrian companion seemed unaffected by the altitude I was forced to stop every few minutes to try and catch my breath as we made our way up the ridgeline. It was worth the pain, however, as the opportunity to photograph climbers returning from Mont Blanc along a very exposed ridge provided breathtaking views and photographic possibilities. We were taking a little bit of a chance with this climb as it was very windy and the pressure was dropping, with the possibility of a forecast storm. Spindrift was whipping off the peaks and, with eleven people loosing their lives on Mont Blanc in the last few weeks, I was less than thrilled at the thought of getting caught in an exposed position.  I was, however, very keen to get some photographs, because the wind was whipping clouds and fog across the mountain at a rapid rate which was creating a lovely play of light. In the end, I climbed only a relatively short distance up the ridge as the conditions were just too dangerous for my experience at that altitude.

This was the first opportunity I had to use the Canon 1DX at high altitude in cold weather and it did not disappoint. At -15 degrees Celsius the Canon 1DX performed flawlessly and I was able to squeeze out nearly 600 frames without any effort, finding no need to warm the battery or swap it for another from a warm pocket. This is remarkable performance in such a hostile environment and is consistent with my experience with the 1DS MK3 and 1D MKIV cameras in Antarctica.

I hope to return to Chamonix in the future and spend more time in the stunningly beautiful French Alps. Along with the Andes mountain range in South America, they rate as some of the most rugged and beautiful mountains I have seen.

For now, I have arrived in Iceland and am looking forward to heading out into the wilds tomorrow morning."
