The ConSensus Project with Michael Zide

On Wednesday, August 20th from 3:30-4:30, Moab Master, Michael Zide, will be speaking on Martha’s Vineyard as part of the 3 day ConSenses Festival.  The title for the talk is “Finding My Island, Traveling with Outlaws and it is about photographing Martha’s Vineyard Island for 12 years with two rambunctious dogs by his side. He will have many sample packs of Moab paper to give away!

Sally Taylor, songwriter and educator and daughter of James Taylor and Carly Simon created ConSenses, a project involving over 140 artists from 23 countries. The ConSenses project is about artistic cooperation and interpretation. It is a revealing and telling glimpse into the artistic process across many artistic media. It begins with a photograph, then each successive artist in the “thread” is given seven days to complete their creation — not knowing from whom they would receive their creative baton upon hand-off, nor to whom their creation would go to next, each successive artist interpreted the artistic work that they were sent in their own medium of expression.

As one of the participating photographers, my photograph, “Silver Brush” was first given to a songwriter, in this case, Carly Simon, to interpret by creating a song with lyrics.  Responding to that image, she created a song entitled “Puckerbrush”.

The song was then sent to Doug Kent, Painter, who created the painting, “In the Puckerbrush”,  as his response to the song.

His painting was then sent to Stacy Lim, Tea Blender who created a tea in response to the painting. Next the tea was sent to movie producer and director, Wes Craven, who wrote a short story as his response to the blended tea.

The ConSenses Festival will go on for three days on Martha’s Vineyard, August 18th, 19th, and 20th.  It is being held at the Grange in West Tisbury.

Star-studded speaker line-up at PhotoPlusExpo

Get ready to be dazzled (and informed) by some of the biggest names in photography. We're pretty stoked to announce the photographers who will be giving short presentations in the Moab booth (#750) during the upcoming PhotoPlusExpo show in NYC.

Like all things Moab, we are taking a slightly different approach to these presentation: We've simply asked the speakers to talk about themselves and their work - no sales pitch. Some will be conducting hands-on printing workshops while others will be providing an intimate discussion on their work. Harold Davis will even be giving away copies of his new book!

We're still hammering out the exact times, but the confirmed line up will include Andy Biggs, Barbara Bordnick, Harold Davis, Jody Dole, Robert Farber, Jim Graham, Ryszard Horowitz, Douglas Kirkland, Jim LaSala, Michael Soluri, Salvatore Vasapolli and Michael Zide.

As you can see, all the photographers are at the peak of their game, each having made a huge impact on the photo industry. Expect every presentation to be a keynote event.

Michael Zide Exhibition on Entrada

Amherst’s Public Art Commission is pleased to present an exhibition of landscape photography by Amherst resident, educator and photographer, Michael Zide. The selection of black and white photographs were taken in Western Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard and California and printed on Moab fine art Entrada paper.

In the world of black and white landscape photography, Michael Zide has a most selective eye.  He possesses that rare quality of artful seeing, bringing his sensitivity to gesture and mood to every image.  Sensual and tactile, his work elicits a visceral response that draws the viewer in to demand a second look and a more thoughtful response. His personal vision began as a child after the otherworldly experience of waking to find a luminous blanket of snow covering his Southern California home. That first snowfall set in motion both the search for a view of equal enchantment, as well as a visual memory in search of meaning.

Not surprisingly, many of his photographs are inspired by the striking drama of winter ice and snow transforming the New England landscape.

Zide's work will be on view through February 28, 2013 at the Amherst Town Hall in Amherst, Massachusetts.

The perfect blend of fun, creativity and learning

We've got some exciting news to share about Michael Zide's week-long course up at the Maine Media Workshops later this month.  Zide will be adding a technical printing component to the program under the direction of printmaster Jim Roselli.

The course kicks off on June 26th and is designed to help photographers develop an awareness of their unique visual voice and of the artistic and technical decisions that lead to successful landscape photographs. Students will then be able to fine-tune their images to obtain the perfect fine art print produced on a variety of Moab papers.

The class caps off at 14 people and is almost full.  Head over here for more info and to register.

Hallmark Institute of Photography Charity Print Project

When our friend, outstanding photographer and educator, Michael Zide, asked us to be involved in The Limited Edition Charity Project at Hallmark Institute of Photography, we jumped at the opportunity.

The project involves students, faculty and staff pooling their photographic skills to benefit the communities in which they live and work.  Selected photographers will print limited editions of 10 on Moab's Colorado Fiber Satine with proceeds from the sale going to various local not-for-profit organizations nominated by the image makers.

We encourage all of you to check it out.
