Infinite Worlds: The People and Places of Space Exploration

Moab Master, Michael Soluri, creates a stunning, unprecedented collection of photographs and essays that goes behind the scenes at NASA, in which the humanity of the astronauts, engineers, scientists, technicians, and ground crews that contributed in saving the Hubble Space Telescope are revealed.

At the Intrepid Sea, Space and Air Museum on Decemeber 10th at 7:30, join photographer Michael Soluri and science journalist Miles O’Brien for an exclusive journey behind the scenes at NASA during preparations for the STS-125 Hubble Servicing Mission. Infinite Worlds, Soluri’s new collection of stunning photographs and accompanying essays, introduces us to the often unseen astronauts and unsung technicians, administrators and ground crew that completed the final servicing mission of the Hubble Space Telescope. Books will be on sale and available for signing.

Acido Dorado: Illusions on Slickrock Metallic Silver

Based in Los Angeles, Mona Kuhn is acclaimed for her contemporary and intimate depictions of the nude. In Acido Dorado: Illusions, she takes the human form in a new direction by blurring the demarcation between figure and abstraction. Here, Kuhn shifts focus to integrate completely the female nude as another element of her raw material merged with light, shadow, and architecture, to create an intimate, mirage-like vignette.

Acido Dorado: Illusions was photographed at architect Robert Stone's secluded glass house located in California's Mojave Desert near Joshua Tree. Inspired by the early autumn light and elongated shadows in the desert at the beginning and the end of the day, the resulting prints are imbued with a fluid, dreamy palette of yellow, gold and blue. Kuhn's collaboration with The Lapis Press introduced her to a process that ultimately gave the images a radiance that complements the shimmering, reflective quality of the images.

"Acido Dorado: Illusions is from an abstracted series, where I blended landscape, figure and architectural lines into one plane of reflective surface. I photographed inside a glass house in the middle of the desert, where the light and reflections would mirror all over its surface."

Promega Fall Art Showcase with Norman Seeff

Los Angeles
1971

Mick had the idea of the Stones coming down the ramp of a ship ‘defecting’ to France – for tax reasons. Rather than risk shooting at the Long Beach docks, I decided to build a set. The session began at midnight. One of my assistants, in period costume, impulsively turned to kiss Mick and lost her footing and they both came down. I captured a sequence of shots that we turned into postcards of classic ‘Stones’ moments.

Norman Seeff

Moab Master, Norman Seeff, is exhibiting in the Fall Art Showcase from October 7 – January 2, 2015 at the Promega. Norman Seeff is displaying his images of the Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Mick Jagger, KISS and more fascinating images.

Harold Davis: An Eclectic Collection

Moab Master, Harold Davis, is very excited to be exhibiting at Arts & Friends, a photography gallery in Heidelberg, Germany. The show, Harold Davis: An Eclectic Collection, will display two large prints, one on Slickrock Silver and Metallic Pearl. There are roughly twenty other prints in the show of varying sizes, printed on Awagami Kozo Washi, Slickrock Pearl and Lasal Exhibition Luster. All the prints are monochromatic. The exhibit runs from October 18 through November 16, 2014.

Moab introduces Juniper Baryta Rag 305 at Photokina

Moab Paper is excited to announce the old-style darkroom paper has come a long way to develop into the Juniper Baryta Rag 305 which has just been launched at the Photokina Show in Germany this week. With the tremendous feedback from our Moab Masters and the outstanding interest from the attendees at Photokina, Moab is eager to launch the Juniper Baryta Rag in the states at PhotoPlus on October 30th. The image above was taken by Moab Master, Jim Graham and printed by Andy Biggs

The new Moab Juniper Baryta Rag 305 is a 100% cotton fiber paper that offers the density of a traditional darkroom FB-type paper to hold detail in the deep blacks of the shadow regions, while producing natural white highlights that’s enhanced with a slight fiber glossy surface texture.

This double weight, true baryta (barium sulfate) coated inkjet fine art paper embraces the unique charm of silver halide by using state-of-the-art coating technology to bring a new method to an old tradition.

Looking to Mount your Slickrock Silver?

Moab's new Slickrock Metallic Silver created a jaw-dropping repsonse from our audience. The only greater response we recieved was towards the Slickrock Metallic Silver face-mounted to Acrylic. This has stirred up a tremendous amount of interest in Slickrock Silver. The image above is an image by Harold Davis done by Lamin-8

The process requires 3 components to our prints: Slickrock Metallic Silver, an adhesive film and the acrylic.

Our recommendation?

For laminating use a high grade clear adhesive film from MacTa

For the acrylic use a high grade plexi glass.  Ensure that the plexi glass does not contain any gas as once the print is sealed it will look to escape and create bubbles in the print.  Here are some grades we suggest from Acrylite here and here

"The Look of Sound" by Norman Seeff

From 28th September 2014 through 25th January 2015 photography and "Rock-n-Roll" enthusiasts can look forward to this spectacular show. Zephyr – space for photography of the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums Mannheim will be presenting in this exhibition "The Look of Sound" almost 200 images by the famous photographer Norman Seeff. Shown for the first time in Europe. Seeff was born in 1939 in South Africa and immigrated after his studies in Medicine in the 1960s to the USA. He became Art Director of the music labels Blue Note and United Artists.

In Los Angeles he quickly became a star in the photographic music business. He photographed and filmed such music and important stars like Jonny Cash, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Steve Jobs, Frank Zappa, Zubin Mehta, just to name a few, and many other celebrities in his special style. The portraits are significant in their spontaneous vitality and give an depth insight into the visual and musical background of an aera.  Seeffs hidden interest focused on researching where creativity comes from: During the photo sessions, which were often filmed as well, he asked the artists he was photographing:What does creativity mean for you? The photographed artists answered without holding back, because they were busy concentrating on the fact they were trying to show their persona throughout the photographic shoot. This gives us a deep insight into the artists soul. We will present some of this documented filmed session material on monitors throughout this "Rocking" show.

All digital images were printed on Moab’s Entrada Rag Natural 190.

The ConSensus Project with Michael Zide

On Wednesday, August 20th from 3:30-4:30, Moab Master, Michael Zide, will be speaking on Martha’s Vineyard as part of the 3 day ConSenses Festival.  The title for the talk is “Finding My Island, Traveling with Outlaws and it is about photographing Martha’s Vineyard Island for 12 years with two rambunctious dogs by his side. He will have many sample packs of Moab paper to give away!

Sally Taylor, songwriter and educator and daughter of James Taylor and Carly Simon created ConSenses, a project involving over 140 artists from 23 countries. The ConSenses project is about artistic cooperation and interpretation. It is a revealing and telling glimpse into the artistic process across many artistic media. It begins with a photograph, then each successive artist in the “thread” is given seven days to complete their creation — not knowing from whom they would receive their creative baton upon hand-off, nor to whom their creation would go to next, each successive artist interpreted the artistic work that they were sent in their own medium of expression.

As one of the participating photographers, my photograph, “Silver Brush” was first given to a songwriter, in this case, Carly Simon, to interpret by creating a song with lyrics.  Responding to that image, she created a song entitled “Puckerbrush”.

The song was then sent to Doug Kent, Painter, who created the painting, “In the Puckerbrush”,  as his response to the song.

His painting was then sent to Stacy Lim, Tea Blender who created a tea in response to the painting. Next the tea was sent to movie producer and director, Wes Craven, who wrote a short story as his response to the blended tea.

The ConSenses Festival will go on for three days on Martha’s Vineyard, August 18th, 19th, and 20th.  It is being held at the Grange in West Tisbury.
