Moab and Levi's Join Forces

Like peanut butter and chocolate, we were destined to find each other...

Tonight marks the opening of the Levi's Photo Workshops - the second community-based venue for collaboration and creative production (the first was last Summer in San Francisco).

Open to the public and housed in an open gallery space with a downtown vibe, the workshops feature a professional-grade studio, vintage camera rental, a dozen loaded Mac workstations, a few high end printers and curated shows.  All the equipment, studio space and atmosphere are free.

The launch kicks off tonight at 8pm with an awesome party and opening exhibition at the Workshop's NYC SoHo location on Wooster Street (between Broome and Canal).

The exhibition, New York: New Work, with Tim Barber and online gallery Tiny Vices features over 30 photographers and their shots of New York all printed on Lasal Photo Luster.  To get your name on the invite list click here to RSVP.

The Great Print Event at Calumet

Join us at Calumet LA, Chicago and NYC for a one-day printing event on October 2nd.  Learn how to produce professional images on Canon's Pixma Pro printers and sit in on color management and Photoshop seminars.

Calumet will be offering discounts on all the products being demonstrated that day, so by attending, you not only learn something (and get to mingle with Moab), but you get to save some cash.  Can't beat that.

Spiffy up your iPhone 4

This doesn't have much to do with Moab - or even paper - but we thought this was kinda cool.  For a mere $13 you can make your new iPhone look like a Leica.  Since we have way too much time on our hands, we wanted to see what a Moab phone would look like.

Having the Moab skin on your phone will make your pics look a thousand times better!

If you have some ideas of your own for a Moab phone skin, either post a comment here by clicking the link below or email us your designs and we'll post them.

How to handle outgassing issues

Since many of the prints that end up on Moab papers end up framed and in a gallery, we tend to work closely with framers.  One issue that continues to pop up is outgassing, and we'd like to take this opportunity to describe what it is and what you can do to prevent it from happening to you.

Outgassing is something that all fine art printers should consider when images are to be framed behind glass. Outgassing is the term used to describe the evaporation of solvents left behind after printing with an inkjet printer. This outgassing can create a fog on the inside of the glazing (glass) of a frame. Outgassing can be properly managed in the following steps:

1) After printing, let your print sit out to dry for at least 10 minutes.

2) After the short drying period, you can place a sheet of bond paper over the print for at least 24 hours to accelerate the absorption of solvents.

3) After 24 hours you can remove the paper from over your printed image.

4) You can use just about any paper to accelerate this outgassing, as long as the paper is chemically stable (non-acidic). Newspaper is a definitely no-no.

If you do not have any extra paper around, you can always let the outgassing take its normal course, and we recommend at least 7 days before framing the printed image.

As a final preservation measure, we recommend you mat your image with Rising Museum Board, a 100% cotton matboard used by every major museum.  Why?  Because since you've spent countless hours choosing your printer, selecting your favorite Moab paper and producing your image, using high-quality conservation materials during the framing process if just as important.

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Twenty-one years ago today, Stevie Ray Vaughan played at a huge concert in (and outside) the Houston Astrodome in Texas, and photographer Tracy Anne Hart captured the moment in her triptych series titled, Texas Flood

"The three photos were captured during the guitar solo of the song "Texas Flood" and are taken from one strip of six 35mm negatives. Stevie picked the three images off of my contact sheet himself.  I almost lost the two rolls of black and white I shot, I found them about a week later in a pocket in my big camera bag!"

It's rare to find a photographer so dedicated to a single subject like Tracy, and her dedication to documenting SRV places her into this unique position of having one of the largest original photo collections of Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Each limited edition poster is printed on Entrada Rag Natural or Somerset Photo and can purchased directly from Tracy's website.

Winning images on Entrada

Last June we sponsored PDN magazine's fine art CURATOR contest.  The winning images were showcased in that month's issue of PDN.  Fortunately (for us) there was a world-class panel of judges to select the winners because from the pool of submissions we saw, we were overwhelmed at the quality.

If you want to see these prints up close, the MILK gallery in NYC is displaying all the winning images - but the show closes today. Yeah, we know, short notice, but if you have a chance to swing by the gallery you'll not only see the stunning prints, but you'll see them reproduced on Entrada Rag Natural 300

Back to School with Moab

With the hot weather we can't believe there's only about a month of summer left.  But this time of year also signals the back-to-school rush.  We wanted to contribute in some way so we've decided to take 15% off on all the Chinle Ice Nine portfolios and refill pages.

But there's more! (couldn't resist).  We're also blowing out the Chinle Leather v2 Digital Books (8x9 size only) for a whopping $19.95.  All the refill pages for these books are also 15% off.

No school kit would be complete without some means of storage for your prints - Our Economy Folios and Chinle Archival boxes are also 15% off.

Finally, protect your prints with our famous Desert Varnish Spray and Gel.  Yup, that's right, they're 15% off as well.

All these savings can be applied by entering the secret coupon code (BTS2010) in your shopping cart.  The discounts will be automatically applied.

An Afternoon with Douglas Kirkland

[reported by Scott Conry, National Sales Manager, Legion Paper]

Although we have been working with Douglas Kirkland for years, we never had the opportunity (or time) to just sit and talk with the Master.  So, a few weeks ago I called Douglas's studio to see if he had a moment to meet.  His assistant, Miranda, answered with a pleasant greeting and got Douglas on the phone.  We decided on a day best for me to pop by in the morning before their afternoon shoot, which would allow me to see the images that they were printing for their large Brisbane Gallery of Modert Art show in September.  The meeting was set and my schedule was prepared for about an hour long visit.

NEW Epson 7900/9900 Profiles

We constantly update our profiles to provide you the absolute best quality for most of the pro printers out there.  The most recent profile we just recreated was the Epson 7900/9900.

If you have this printer, head over to our ICC profile page and download this new profile.  We promise you won't be disappointed.

If you haven't used any of our profiles, we suggest you give them a test-drive.  We develop every profile in-house ourselves to ensure you obtain the best possible print.  Of course, nothing beats a custom profile for your specific workflow, but ours come pretty darn close.

PDN Wants to Get Friendly With Our Newest Paper

The first reviews of Somerset Museum Rag are in:

From PDN Gear Guide

"These days, 100 percent cotton papers are all the rage because they can give your photos an artful look and feel. In fact, the texture of cotton papers is so pleasing, it's almost a shame to put these prints behind glass.

Moab has added a 100 percent cotton Museum Rag to its venerable Somerset line of art papers and we guarantee you'll want to fondle your photos as soon as they come out of the printer. (Just don't touch the ink until it dries.)

We got excellent dynamic range with superior D-MAX using Somerset Museum Rag; our blacks in both color and black-and-white prints had the most detail of all the papers we tried. At 300gsm, this is a heavy paper that soaks up the ink but without blotching the results. Though matte papers sometimes produce flatter images, color in our prints of classic Le Mans racecars really popped.

Though cotton papers can produce unpredictable photographic results because of their inconsistent surfaces, Somerset Museum Rag is produced by St. Cuthberts Mill in England using a traditional cylinder mould machine which has created an exceedingly smooth texture on the paper. Consequently we'd recommend using this paper for a range of photo prints: anything from portraits to landscapes to macro work."
