Quick Lesson From David Adamson

One of the "godfathers" of digital printing, and longtime Somerset user David Adamson offers an expert diagnosis of some common flaws found in a digital photo.  Check out the article.  

David Adamson is a Tamarind certified Master Printer. He started Adamson Editions in 1979 as a lithography studio. In 1993 David bought his first Iris 3047 printer and became one of the first digital ateliers in the country. 

Epson 3880 Profiles

Laying Out Your Images

If you're a portrait or wedding photographer and have ever wondered how people easily layout their images when printing on Moab's two sided papers, including our new 5x7 Entradalope cards, then I have a tip for you.  

At the Photo Plus show Jim Graham, a Moab Master, produced a Wedding Album with our new Chinle Ice Nine Portfolio, using a product called Photo Junction.  He spent about 10 minutes introducing me to the product and within that time I felt like I could easily layout a entire wedding album on my own.  The cool thing is the program is free, easy to use and will help you with digital workflow and image layout.

Moab Paper (Booth #630) Moab recently unveiled some great looking portfolio books named ICE NINE, in 8×9 and 12×13 inch format. Also, the company has a great sample rack with their entire photo line. I made a print for their booth this year, and the company printed up a card with one of my photos and a partially excerpted tip from my book, 301 Inkjet Tips and Techniques. I also recommend checking out the Moab Somerset Photo Satin 300 paper, as well as the amazing botanical image by Barbara Bordnick printed on the company’s Moenkopi Japanese Washi. Very impressive.

Meet the Entradalopes

Day one of PhotoPlus Expo and we launched two new products.  The first is Entradalopes: Developed in our secret underground Moab laboratory deep below the La Sal mountains, Entradalopes are a technical marvel:  a combination of our award-winning100% cotton Entrada Rag scored and folded cards and matching envelopes.

The 'Lopes generated a lot of interest from photographers looking for ways to expand their business as well as to promote themselves.  Check them out and let us know what you think.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, PROFIT!

Photo consultant, founder of ShootSmarter.com and card-carrying Moabite, Will Crockett has a new how-to DVD called, "Light, Camera, Profits!" designed to help show you how to save money before, during and after your shoot.

In the preview below, Will talks about why he uses Moab papers in his workflow.  There's also a more extensive trailer here at ShootSmarter.com. 

Will always has great ideas to pass along and this DVD is no exception.  Packed with over 2 hours of tips for beginners and professionals alike, there's something in here for everyone.

 



A Moab Master

I first met the photographer and bookmaker Lauren Henkin about two weeks ago and I was instantly blown away.  I was taken aback at the craftsmanship and detail that went in to each handmade book (using Entrada Rag as the pages) and was reminded of the many different ways that artists use to present their work.  The book that Lauren showed me had the Entrada pages professionally bound to a hardcover, cloth-lined case.

Lauren's books made such a huge impression on everyone here at Moab that we asked her to become a Moab Master. Over the years we have had the fortune to work with so many photographers and artists who use Moab papers to enhance their work, but we had no method to share these photographers with the world.   So we developed the Moab Masters - a collection of artists both well-established and up-and-coming, each with their own unique voice. You'll find artists who are just about to take off, like Lauren, alongside long-established photographers such as Douglas Kirkland, Robert Farber and Barbara Bordnick. The Moab Master galleries can be found on our Facebook page.

Green Day

I've been fortunate to have been able to tag along with Andy Biggs this week as he gave some lectures on "Digital Printing: What Your Mother Never Told You."  One question that kept popping up is "what's the most eco-friendly paper you have?"  To me, the "greenest" papers in the Moab family are the Moenkopi papers.  They're made from mulberry (kozo) fibers that are harvested from the bark of a living mulberry tree.  The tree isn't cut down and the bark renews itself quickly.  The Moenkopi Bizan takes it one step further.  It's handmade, which means it's made with a minimal amount of electricity and is dried by the sun.

A lot of the folks around here are partial to cotton as being just as eco-friendly.  We'll get to that next time.

Front and center is our blog.  We’ll be sharing printing and paper tips, highlighting photo & Moab events around the country, showing some of the cool things our customers are doing and probably a bunch of other things we haven’t thought of yet.

Next is our Knowledge Base – we get asked a LOT of questions, from the very basic to the truly perplexing.  The knowledge base is where we’ll share what we know and what we learn along the way.  This should be your first stop for paper  and printing questions. 

Improved ICC profile library – we’ve added many more profiles and (hopefully) made it easier to find what you’re looking for.  We also posted all sorts of instructions for using them in the hopes of de-mystifying the process.

Most of all, we want to hear from you.  If you’re doing something cool and want us to link to it, drop us a line.  If there’s something you’d like to see on the site, let us know.

How to feed cut sheets of canvas through your printer

,

Here is a quick rundown of some ideas if you are wanting to print on cut sheets of canvas, such as our Moab Ansazi Canvas:

1) With the adjustable paper guide in place, slightly back off the guide about 1/4 of an inch away from the canvas. This allows the printer to wiggle the media into place.

2) Be sure to use the recommended paper path for canvas on your printer. Most printers do not allow you to use bulk, or cassette paper paths. Most printers require you to use a manual one-at-a-time feeding process.

3) Be sure to use the correct media type in your printer driver, in addition to icc profile. The media type instructs the printer to accept the proper thickness for the media, as well as it instructs the printer on how much ink to place on the media.

Jose Gaytan explores the Gowanus landscape

Jose Gaytan photo by Ángel Franco/The New York TimesWe always love to see friends in the news, even more so when they have the vision and talent of Jose Gaytan. In Moab, we tend to surround ourselves with the beauty of the southwest landscape with its blue skies and turbulent rock scapes, it's almost cheating because it doesn't take much talent to find a breathtaking scene. Jose on the other hand, has spent the last seven years exploring what surrounds him and using his vision to create those moments which after time begin to paint a new reality. His photos of "Brooklyn’s famous mile-and-a-half long canal (Gowanus), photographing moments of serenity, color and even beauty amid the decaying postindustrial landscape" are a testament to his talent for finding the surreal beauty of his landscape.

His photos will be featured in the Brooklyn Public Library’s main branch through Aug 29 in an exhibit titled, “Brooklyn in Transition: A Photographic Essay of the Gowanus.”
