Douglas Kirkland

Douglas Kirkland: Coco & Marilyn

DK Marilyn HelsinkiWEB.jpg

The Finnish Museum of Photography's new exhibition space, named K1, will be opened with an inaugural showcase, featuring two exhibitions in one — Coco Chanel and An Evening with Marilyn — from Canadian photographer and Moab Master, Douglas Kirkland (b. 1934). The photographs depict two iconic women who developed a deep understanding of the power of vision and gaze.

Kirkland photographed Marilyn Monroe and Coco Chanel in the early 1960s while working at Look magazine. The images from six decades in the past deliver a dose of the Hollywood starlet cult and the history of fashion. Viewed today, the works offer a direct view into the early heyday of photography as a central feature of modern consumer culture. The exhibition also explores the life cycles of cultural icons, and the raw power of photography.

Douglas Kirkland is a photographer with a long career in Hollywood, known mainly for shooting renowned stars. He has also worked on more than 150 feature film productions.

Douglas Kirkland prints on Entrada Rag Natural. "I feel that Entrada Natural is the perfect paper for me because of the rich dimension it provides us for the fine art shows which we do in various parts of the world."

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Photo Op.

Douglas Kirkland: A Life in Pictures

This is a rare and remarkable opportunity to meet and hear about the life and work of one of the living legends of photography.  Mr. Kirkland’s talk will be followed by a book-signing for Douglas Kirkland: A Life in Picures, $125 published by Glitterati Incorporated, with a foreword by director Baz Luhrmann and his wife Catherine Martin.  Books will be available for purchase through the Cincinnati Art Museum bookstore at the event. In conjunction with FOTOFOCUS 2014, we present the remarkable images of world-renowned photographer, Douglas Kirkland. The images exhibited are gleaned from Mr. Kirkland’s astonishing 60-year career as a photographer for Life and Look magazines and include subjects like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel, Grace Jones, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlie Chaplin, Brigitte Bardot and so many more.  Also included are iconic images from the best-known movies that we all know but may not know are the works of Douglas Kirkland—such as the image in the movie poster of Julie Andrews running through the hills in The Sound of Music; and other classics from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, Titanic and 150 more famous films. The artist was recently the honoree at PhotoLA, and in the Venice Biennale where Vanity Fair Magazine hosted his Opening Party & Reception.

Star-studded speaker line-up at PhotoPlusExpo

Get ready to be dazzled (and informed) by some of the biggest names in photography. We're pretty stoked to announce the photographers who will be giving short presentations in the Moab booth (#750) during the upcoming PhotoPlusExpo show in NYC.

Like all things Moab, we are taking a slightly different approach to these presentation: We've simply asked the speakers to talk about themselves and their work - no sales pitch. Some will be conducting hands-on printing workshops while others will be providing an intimate discussion on their work. Harold Davis will even be giving away copies of his new book!

We're still hammering out the exact times, but the confirmed line up will include Andy Biggs, Barbara Bordnick, Harold Davis, Jody Dole, Robert Farber, Jim Graham, Ryszard Horowitz, Douglas Kirkland, Jim LaSala, Michael Soluri, Salvatore Vasapolli and Michael Zide.

As you can see, all the photographers are at the peak of their game, each having made a huge impact on the photo industry. Expect every presentation to be a keynote event.

Kirkland's Monroe Exhibition on Entrada

WESTWOOD GALLERY NYC presents an exhibition of iconic photographs of Marilyn Monroe by legendary photographer Douglas Kirkland, October 26 - December 15, 2012.

The exhibition will showcase stunning photographs of Monroe as she posed for Kirkland lying on a bed enveloped only in white silk sheets. Photographed by Kirkland on November 17, 1961, she died a few months later in 1962; 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of Monroe's death.

On view are images of Monroe never before shown to the public, as well as a series of aesthetically superior quality carbon prints, made exclusively for this exhibition. The exhibition also includes behind the scenes black and white photographs of Kirkland, taken during his photo shoot with Monroe in a California studio. One photograph shows Kirkland as he leans dramatically over an interior balcony to capture ethereal images of Monroe in the bed positioned below.

All the prints in the exhibition were produced on Entrada Rag Natural 290.

Famous Photogs Pose With Their Most Iconic Images

The title (and image) says it all.

Moab Master, Douglas Kirkland, is featured among some of his peers in this Wired magazine tribute to the people behind some of today's most iconic photos.

Photographer Tim Mantoani captures each portrait with the enormous 20×24 Polaroid format.

"Over the course of the project, some of the photographers who participated passed away. Polaroid went belly up, making 20×24 film that much harder to come by. The weight of each photo’s importance as a historic document became more apparent with each loss."

Douglas Kirkland and Entrada

Douglas Kirkland, the famed photographer and icon, has long used Entrada Rag Natural for his final gallery prints.  At any given time, Kirkland has multiple show openings scattered around the globe: Japan, Germany, United States - and one in Italy that opened over the weekend: Bassano Fotografia 2011.

Bassano del Grappa - the small city in northern Italy and home to the Grappa spirits - was taken over by a multi-artist photo show headlined by Kirkland.  Featuring a selection from Kirkland's vast collection  of images, the exhibit was printed entirely on Entrada Rag Natural 300.

Coco Chanel

If you happen to be swinging through Tokyo today, then make a point to stop by the Coco Chanel exhibit featuring a collection of photos from Douglas Kirkland circa 1962.

In 1962, world-class photographer Douglas Kirkland spent three weeks with the most important fashion icon of all time, Coco Chanel. Over the course of this stay, Kirkland photographed Coco with her friends, on the runway, and in the privacy of her homes. Kirkland reveals these never-before-seen photographs in all their vibrancy, shedding new light on one of the world's most enduring, multi-faceted, and bestselling fashion legends of all time.

The exhibit runs from September 4-29 at the Coco Chanel Ginza and all the images were printed on Entrada Rag Natural.

An Afternoon with Douglas Kirkland

[reported by Scott Conry, National Sales Manager, Legion Paper]

Although we have been working with Douglas Kirkland for years, we never had the opportunity (or time) to just sit and talk with the Master.  So, a few weeks ago I called Douglas's studio to see if he had a moment to meet.  His assistant, Miranda, answered with a pleasant greeting and got Douglas on the phone.  We decided on a day best for me to pop by in the morning before their afternoon shoot, which would allow me to see the images that they were printing for their large Brisbane Gallery of Modert Art show in September.  The meeting was set and my schedule was prepared for about an hour long visit.
