Moab introduces Juniper Baryta Rag 305 at Photokina

Moab Paper is excited to announce the old-style darkroom paper has come a long way to develop into the Juniper Baryta Rag 305 which has just been launched at the Photokina Show in Germany this week. With the tremendous feedback from our Moab Masters and the outstanding interest from the attendees at Photokina, Moab is eager to launch the Juniper Baryta Rag in the states at PhotoPlus on October 30th. The image above was taken by Moab Master, Jim Graham and printed by Andy Biggs

The new Moab Juniper Baryta Rag 305 is a 100% cotton fiber paper that offers the density of a traditional darkroom FB-type paper to hold detail in the deep blacks of the shadow regions, while producing natural white highlights that’s enhanced with a slight fiber glossy surface texture.

This double weight, true baryta (barium sulfate) coated inkjet fine art paper embraces the unique charm of silver halide by using state-of-the-art coating technology to bring a new method to an old tradition.

PhotoPlus Day 1 Highlights

What a whirlwind of a day! The show was packed. Slickrock Metallic Silver almost stole the show, but it had some stiff competition with the Moab Master presentations at the far end of the booth. Large 40x60 prints on the Silver from Harold Davis and Jim LaSala truly showed the impressive caliber of this amazing paper.

And those who were able to see the five Moab Master presentations got a real treat with insights into NASA, Haiti, Cuba, African wildlife and fashion. Live Slickrock printing demos on the new Canon Pixma PRO-1 rounded out the day.

The line-up tomorrow is equally impressive:

11:00am Michael Zide Through A Photographer’s Eyes
12:00pm Jody Dole Renowned image maker and digital photographer pioneer
3:00pm Ryszard Horowitz Capturing nonexistent world

Star-studded speaker line-up at PhotoPlusExpo

Get ready to be dazzled (and informed) by some of the biggest names in photography. We're pretty stoked to announce the photographers who will be giving short presentations in the Moab booth (#750) during the upcoming PhotoPlusExpo show in NYC.

Like all things Moab, we are taking a slightly different approach to these presentation: We've simply asked the speakers to talk about themselves and their work - no sales pitch. Some will be conducting hands-on printing workshops while others will be providing an intimate discussion on their work. Harold Davis will even be giving away copies of his new book!

We're still hammering out the exact times, but the confirmed line up will include Andy Biggs, Barbara Bordnick, Harold Davis, Jody Dole, Robert Farber, Jim Graham, Ryszard Horowitz, Douglas Kirkland, Jim LaSala, Michael Soluri, Salvatore Vasapolli and Michael Zide.

As you can see, all the photographers are at the peak of their game, each having made a huge impact on the photo industry. Expect every presentation to be a keynote event.

A few weeks with Andy Biggs on Safari

Three to four times a year, Moab Master (and Moab's technical guru) Andy Biggs heads out to Africa to lead photographic safaris.  We gain some insight into these safaris through Andy's blog where he relates the day's adventures and publishes some breathtaking photos.

Andy's current tour is coming to a close, which is why we thought it appropriate to link back to his blog to read the past 16 days of his trip.  Enjoy!

Austin Photo Expo 2011

If you happen to be in Austin this weekend (and, really, who won't be), the annual two-day Austin Photo Expo kicks off on Saturday, November 12th at the Norris Conference Center.

Not counting the size of Texas, there will be two very big things happening at the expo: First, Andy Biggs will be giving his famous presentation on fine art printing on Saturday @ 2:10pm.  Second, all the seminars will be free and open to the public.

Since the seminars are free, entry is on a first-come, first-seated basis, so make sure you arrive early and plan to spend the day.

How to ship your (Moab) prints

We are often asked how to protect Moab prints for shipment, so we thought to ask Andy Biggs, the one person we know who ships his images all over the globe. Here's what he had to say:

"As far as shipping a print, the best way is to ship it flat. I do this by placing my print in a clear bag from clearbags.com, and then I tape the corners onto a flat piece of cardboard. I then cut out similar sized pieces of cardboard and sandwich them in front and in back of the original piece of cardboard. I will typically have 5 to 7 pieces of cardboard in total. I then tape all edges together, which then makes for a very rigid shipping item.

If shipping flat isn't an option, as in when I ship large prints 20x30 and up, I will wrap the print in between two pieces of glassine or tissue paper. I will tape up the package after I place the print into a durable shipping tube, as I want the diameter of the print to be the same as the inside of the tube. So I place the print in about 1/3 of the way, letting the print expand slowly to match the inside diameter of the tube. I then tape the rolled up print onto itself (actually the tissue paper). Then I let the whole thing down into the tube.

Voila! I recommend tubes from Yazoo Mills. Great product and they ship out quickly."

Portfolios for Photographers

Andy Biggs, the "Global Photographer" (and Moab Master) "put together a video here in the studio to show many of the different portfolio options that are on the market today. The idea was to put forth some tangible ideas for your own photo portfolios, and the products in the video range from around $5.50 to around $400."

In addition to some great products from Lost Luggage, PortfolioBox and Dane Creek Portfolios, the video includes our Chinle Ice Nine Portfolios, Chinle Digital Books and Chinle Economy Folios.

Print Like a Pro

We're bringing in the big guns for this camera and printing seminar in Chicago on Wednesday, June 22nd. Join Brian Matsumoto and Andy Biggs for their seminar entitled, Capture. Print. Present. Simplifying the Journey of the Digital Print.

This full-day seminar on Canon's Chicago campus in Itasca will unravel the mystery behind getting the best image from capture to the final output so you can tackle the digital photographic workflow with ease. There will be extensive Q&A as well as hands-on shooting and printing.

Free prints of your favorite image will be printed out on Canon's large format imagePROGRAF printers (on Moab paper of course).  Registration is $30, which is credited toward any Moab and Canon products purchased through IT Supplies. Lunch will be provided.

Meet Andy Biggs at Dury's this weekend

Moab's coming to Nashville and we're hauling along Andy Biggs, photographer extraordinaire and all-around nice guy.  On Friday Andy will show you how he makes his beautiful prints.  Have a technical issue?  This is the man to asnwer it. Then on Saturday, Andy will present his popular program, "Click to Print."

If you are a photographer and want to hear how to become more profitable in your business, Andy will lay it out for you.  As photographers I think we would all agree that one of the missing ingredients in completing our vision for an image is the final output.  Total print control with no excuses.   A “meet and greet” will follow and Moab Paper swatch books will be available for all in attendance.  If you are interested in profitability and control (and who isn't?), make time to be with us.

These events will take place at Dury’s, 701 Ewing Avenue, Nashville, 37203.  No need to register for these classes - just show up to either or both at your convenience!
